From the Wild West days of the United States in the 1800's until now, Poker remains to be the most popular card game. Nobody really knows for sure how Poker started, but many believe that it was developed from many card games of the past.
Many historians believe that Poker came from the French card game Poque. However, some believe that Poker came from the German game Pochspiel, in which there is bluffing involved, just like the modern Poker. Others believe that the word Poker came from pukka, a Hindu word, and even from Hocus Pocus, which magicians often used in their magic tricks.
Poke, a term used by pickpockets, might have been an earlier version of the word "poker". A cardsharp, somebody who is an expert in cheating at cards, might have used the word "poke" to relieve a sucker from his poke, only adding an "r" to make it "poker". The word "poker" might have been used so that the victims will not notice that they have been cheated on.
In 1834, an American writer named Jonathan H. Green made a reference to the card game of poker. Green mentioned a card game being played in Mississippi riverboats, which he called the "cheating game". This game was the most popular card game being played on the Mississippi riverboats. The "cheating game" has two to four players, and was played with twenty cards—using only the aces, kings, queens, jacks and tens. Each player was dealt with five cards. Realizing that this might have been the first reference to the game, Green called it poker.
Many years later, and poker evolved into many variations. From the twenty cards played on the Mississippi riverboats, poker evolved into a card game with thirty-two cards. Presently, poker is played with the modern deck of fifty-two cards, minus the two Jokers.
Nowadays, being the most popular card game in the world, poker is not only played in casinos and meetings, but also in various competitions and tournaments. Probably the most prestigious tournament in the poker world, the World Poker Series, attracts poker players around the world. It is known to have given the best poker players titles and big cash prizes. Even popular celebrities around the world compete for titles and prizes in some poker tournaments.
As computers and the internet have become widely used, poker also made it online. In fact, online poker is one of the most popular online card game. Having many time-saving features, online poker is preferred by some players than the real poker. In fact, in this modern age of technology, there are more poker games to be played by poker players, and there are more prizes and titles to be won. Indeed, poker will probably still remain as the top card game in the years to come.
